Dan Clark Audio, founded by engineer Dan Clark in San Diego, spent seven years building a reputation under the MrSpeakers name before relaunching under his own name in 2019. The turning point was the Ether, the company's first fully in-house planar magnetic design, which established the sound and build quality the brand is still known for. Since then, Dan Clark Audio has focused specifically on closed-back planar magnetic headphones, developing patented driver and tuning technology, most recently the Acoustic Metamaterial Tuning System (AMTS), to solve a problem most planar makers don't even attempt: getting an open, spacious, detailed sound out of a sealed enclosure.
That focus shows in the lineup. The Stealth sits at the top as the reference closed-back design, built around a fourth-generation planar driver and years of AMTS development, and remains one of the most respected closed-back headphones made by anyone. The E3 sits just below it, using a newer fifth-generation driver to deliver flagship-level detail and tonal richness at a meaningfully lower price. It's a personal favorite around here, genuinely one of the most complete-sounding closed-back headphones we carry. The new AEON Core rounds out the range at a more accessible tier, aimed squarely at mixing and monitoring work, with an aluminum-and-wood build that's the heaviest and most rugged in the DCA lineup.
For an open-back experience from the same engineering, Dan Clark also makes the Expanse and the Corina, their reference electrostatic flagship, built on the same platform and tuning philosophy as Stealth. Across every model, the goal stays the same: a headphone you forget you're wearing, with sound that competes with, and often beats, options costing significantly more.
