Audeze was founded in 2008 by Sankar Thiagasamudram and Alexander Rosson, working out of a Southern California garage, after they met an engineer who had developed flexible circuit materials for NASA and realized the technology could be adapted for headphone drivers. To turn that idea into an actual product, they brought in Dragoslav Colich, an engineer with over thirty years of experience designing planar magnetic drivers, as CTO, and together the team built the LCD-1, Audeze's first headphone, which made its debut at CanJam in 2009.
That founding idea, applying advanced materials science to planar magnetic driver design, became the throughline for everything Audeze has built since. The LCD-2 and LCD-3 established the company as a serious force in high-end headphones, followed by the LCD-X, LCD-XC, and the current flagship LCD-5, alongside more accessible models like the compact LCD-1 and the EL-8. Audeze has also pushed planar technology into new categories entirely, including some of the first planar magnetic in-ear monitors (iSine, Euclid) and planar-driver gaming headsets (Penrose, Mobius), plus a partnership with BMW's Designworks studio on industrial design for products like the Deckard DAC/amp.
Every Audeze planar magnetic driver is still designed and built in-house at the company's own factory in Southern California, where the team hand-assembles and tests each high-end unit. That vertical integration, controlling driver design, materials, and assembly all under one roof, has made Audeze one of the most consistently awarded names in headphone audio, and one of the few companies that helped define planar magnetic headphones as a category rather than just building within it.
