About this collection

HEDD Audio was founded in Berlin in October 2015 by Klaus Heinz, a physicist whose relationship with sound goes back to the 1970s, when he ran a Berlin hi-fi shop and became one of the earliest developers of Air Motion Transformer (AMT) speaker technology, work that eventually led him to found ADAM Audio, one of the most recognizable names in professional studio monitors. After decades building ADAM into an industry standard, Heinz left to start over with HEDD, working alongside his son, a mastering engineer and musicologist, to build a smaller, family-run company focused entirely on getting AMT technology right.

That single-minded focus shows in the product line. HEDD builds studio monitors, subwoofers, and main speakers used by producers and mastering engineers around the world, all engineered and assembled in Berlin rather than outsourced to keep quality control close to home. The company's most distinctive product, though, is the HEDDphone, a full-size headphone built around a genuine Air Motion Transformer driver rather than the dynamic or planar magnetic drivers found in nearly every other high-end headphone. AMT drivers move air through a pleated diaphragm that folds and unfolds rather than simply moving back and forth, producing extremely fast, detailed transient response, the same quality that made HEDD and ADAM's studio monitors so respected among people who need to hear exactly what's happening in a mix.

The result is a headphone that sounds and behaves less like a typical audiophile flagship and more like a studio monitor built for your head: uncompromisingly accurate, built for people who want to hear a recording exactly as it was made, and backed by roughly five decades of one physicist's obsession with getting sound reproduction right.
